Capturing the Athleticism of Gymnasts: Team Photography for Salt Lake City and Northern Utah Gymnastics Teams
As a former gymnast and now gymnast mom, I know I’m biased. But prove me wrong when I say that you won’t find more dedicated and dominating childhood athletes than gymnasts.
If you could see the work these kids put into every single practice…..
I’ve had the incredible opportunity to photograph many gymnasts individually, and now, I’m ready to take that experience to a team level. My goal is to create images that tell the story of who these athletes are—beyond the leotard.
Why Team Photography Matters
Team photos are often seen as a tradition, but they’re so much more than that. These images aren’t just about documenting what the team looks like for the year—they're about capturing the hard work, dedication, and personality of each gymnast. It’s about showcasing their unique journey in the sport, whether they’re competing at a high level or just getting started.
For gymnastics gyms in Northern Utah, these team photos are an essential way to highlight the talent and passion within your gym. They're not only a great keepsake for athletes and families but also serve as powerful marketing tools for your gym. Professional photography elevates your gym’s image and helps showcase the community you’ve built.
My Approach to Gymnastics Team Photography
I don’t just take pictures of pretty leotards—I take photos that make moms cry because they show the heart and determination behind every gymnast. My goal is to capture more than just poses. I want to capture the joy, the focus, and the camaraderie that define these young athletes.
Here’s how we’ll do it:
1. Mini Sessions for Each Gymnast: Each athlete will get a dedicated mini session—typically 5-10 minutes each—so I can capture a range of dynamic poses. These images go beyond the standard team photo to reflect each gymnast’s individual journey.
2. Custom Backgrounds: Whether we’re shooting in your gym or in a rented studio, we’ll work together to create the right backdrop that feels natural and reflects your gym's personality. While plain backgrounds work for traditional headshots, I find lifestyle backdrops often create more impactful images.
3. Team Photos Made Easy: Whether we create a full team photo or design one in post-production, the final images will reflect the unity and energy of your gym.
4. Flexible Packages: I offer digital-only packages as well as print options, so parents can choose what works best for them. And if gymnasts want multiple sessions with different leotards, we can make that happen
OR
We’ll do it this way…. and rumor on the street from my gymnast friends is, this is the way they prefer!!
I’ll work with the members of your team who would like to participate in the session to schedule a day and location for the entire team to come have an entire session together. We will take turns with each girl for individual poses, take team photos of everyone together, and also take small group photos of whoever would like them!
I recently did this type of session for a group of Level 9 gymnasts who modeled for me. They said they absolutely LOVED shooting this way. They felt like it was a bonding experience and they felt like they got a greater variety of images. It was pretty obvious to me that these girls loved spending the time together!
Each girl brought multiple leotards as well, and I absolutely encourage that! While gymnastics is a team sport, it’s also an individual journey. I love highlighting that!
Why Professional Gymnastics Photography?
Parents and gym owners alike will agree that gymnastics is a journey of growth. It’s full of highs, challenges, and incredible personal achievements. Professional photography ensures that these moments are captured in a way that families can treasure for years.
For gyms, it’s a way to showcase your athletes, build your community, and create marketing materials that reflect the dedication and passion that live within your gym.
